Osram HBO lamps are short arc lamps in which the discharge arc fires in an atmosphere of mercury vapor under high pressure. Since HBO lamps give off a great deal of ultraviolet radiation, they are almost exclusively employed in technical-scientific applications, e.g. fluorescent microscopy, hardening of adhesives, or in material testing. Osram/Sylvania HBO lamps provide a high radiation output in the ultraviolet and visible range.

Symptom: Connector base discolored

Fault: Connector base overheated above 230 degrees C due to:

• Faulty electrical connection
• Improper lamp cooling
• Improper operating current

Remedy: Check electrical connections and cooling conditions:

• Tighten or replace
• Check operating current
• Check cooling system (forced or convection)
  
  

Symptom: Base cement blackened

Fault: Connector base overheated; improper lamp cooling

Remedy: Check electrical connections and cooling conditions

Sympton: Severe electrical damage on cathode, electrode tip melted in spherical pattern

Fault:

• Reversed polarity due to:

• Electrical connection incorrectly applied to lamp
• Incorrect wiring
• Wrong lamp installed

Remedy: Check polarity, correct connection if necessary. Check equipment and set-up. Check lamp type to confirm correct lamp for tool.

Symptom: Abnormal deformations of the electrode tips

Fault:

• High current ripple
  
• Lamp operated outside current control range (Overshooting)

Remedy: 

• Check current setting
• Ensure proper quality current (low current ripple)
• Check rectifier/power supply for starting inrush and pulse-mode current peak and minimum.
